Job summary

SYOS Aerospace seeks a Systems Design Engineer to shape architecture, integration, and validation of autonomous systems. You will translate stakeholder needs into verifiable system designs, working across hardware, software, and autonomy to deliver high-performance solutions.

You will document requirements, manage interfaces, and coordinate hardware/software integration while driving rigorous testing and root-cause analysis in a fast-paced environment based in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field and 3+ years of systems engineering experience.
  • Strong understanding of architecture, requirements management, and integration.
  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence and DOORS for traceability and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with hardware and software testing and validation methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and internal teams to gather and document both functional and non-functional system requirements.
  • Translate needs into detailed, verifiable system requirements and manage them through the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain system architecture, subsystems, and interfaces for seamless integration.
  • Evaluate design options and select effective architectures for UAV/UxV systems.
  • Create and maintain interface control documents (ICDs) for subsystem communication.
  • Plan and coordinate hardware and software integration into cohesive systems.
  • Design and execute testing strategies to verify performance and validate requirements.
  • Analyze results, identify root causes, and troubleshoot with teams.
  • Serve as central communications hub to ensure cross-team coherence.
  • Feed test and performance insights back into system design for continuous improvement.

As aSystems Design Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping the architecture, integration, and validation of ourcutting-edgeautonomous systems. You will lead the translation of stakeholder needs into clear system designs and ensure these complex systems perform reliably across all domains. This role is cross-functional, working closely with teams across hardware, software, and autonomy to deliver cohesive, high-performance solutions.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and internal teams to gather, analyze, and document functional and non-functional system requirements.
  • Translate high-level needs into detailed, verifiable system requirements and manage them throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop andmaintainsystem architecture, defining major subsystems and their interfaces for seamless integration.
  • Evaluate and compare technical design options to select the most effective and efficient architecture.
  • Create andmaintaininterface control documents (ICDs) to ensure subsystems communicate effectively.
  • Plan and coordinate the integration of hardware and software components into unified, reliable systems.
  • Design and execute rigorous testing strategies to verify system performance andvalidatethat all requirements are met.
  • Analyze test results,identifyroot causes of anomalies, and work collaboratively to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Serve as a central communication hub between engineering teams tofacilitatesystem-wide coherence and collaboration.
  • Support continuous improvement by feeding test and performance insights back into system designs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, ElectronicsEngineering, Computer Engineering, or relatedfield.
  • 3+ years of experience in systems engineering, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems.
  • Strong understanding of systems architecture, requirements management, and system integration.
  • Experience with tools such as JIRA,ConfluenceandDOORS.
  • Familiarity with testing and validation methodologies across hardware and software.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Bonus Experience:
  • Experience working on unmanned vehicles (UAVs, UUVs, or USVs).
  • Knowledge of autonomy systems and embedded software development.
