Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Working at Hōhepa, you become part of our community of people, staff, volunteers, and contractors who all have a common goal - helping people to reach their full potential and lead enriched and meaningful lives in a holistic, supportive environment. We are a community leader providing services and support for people living with an intellectual disability to live their best lives and find a valued place in our society. Inspired by Dr Rudolf Steiner's principles of anthroposophy, we seek to understand each person and situation as unique, not a one size fits all philosophy.

About the Role

Kererū Service is a one-to-one service based in Hoon Hay, where you will support Jake, a 21-year-old man who lives independently and enjoys a wide range of interests. Jake is passionate about gardening, animals, fast cars, and heavy machinery such as diggers and trucks, and he has an impressive knowledge of these topics. He loves visiting Orana Wildlife Park and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, enjoys swimming in the lazy river, and likes hands-on activities including working with tools, building LEGO creations, and completing diamond art projects. Jake has a great sense of humour, strong interests, and clear ideas about how he wants to live his life. At times, he can become frustrated or upset, so he benefits from support workers who are calm, consistent, confident, and able to maintain clear boundaries while building a positive and trusting relationship with him.

We are looking for someone who can provide support during evenings and every second Sunday, when Jake enjoys outings to Willowbank and attending classic car shows. This role would suit someone who can confidently introduce new experiences and opportunities while maintaining a routine that is predictable, structured, and genuinely person-centred. The role also involves supporting Jake with personal care, medication administration, household tasks, and maintaining a safe and comfortable home environment. A key part of this position is providing steady, respectful support during times of frustration while encouraging independence, choice, and participation in activities that are meaningful to him. You will be patient, adaptable, and proactive, with the ability to bring creativity and initiative to your work. Most importantly, you will have a genuine desire to build a strong, trusting relationship with Jake and support him to live a fulfilling life on his own terms. You will be energetic, empathetic and able to work alongside this person focusing on creating a life of rich and diverse experiences while being able to read situations, problem solve and apply boundaries or offer space.

Daily tasks include supporting with daily routines while encouraging independence to develop skills and personal growth. You will have the confidence to support personal cares, cooking, medication administration, and household tasks. You will be passionate about supporting and extending people's ability to access and be part of their wider community. If you are looking for a new challenge this could be the opportunity for you.

This position's salary scale is set by pay equity and dependant on qualification level, pays between $23.95 and $30 per hour.
