Job summary

NZ Transport Agency is seeking a highly experienced Principal Advisor to join Te Rōpū Waeture - Regulatory Services. You will lead performance monitoring, reporting and assurance across the land transport regulatory system, providing strategic advice to senior leaders and governance bodies.

The role demands confident leadership at Principal level, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to influence Ministers, Boards and executives.

Qualifications

• Proven experience leading performance monitoring and reporting in complex environments, ideally public/regulatory.
• Strong systems thinking and strategic planning with ability to anticipate impacts across a regulatory system.
• Exceptional written, verbal and visual communication for senior audiences (Executive, Board, Ministers).
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills across internal and external networks.
• Experience in regulatory/public sector accountability and governance.
• Willingness to understand Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the public sector.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver objective monitoring and reporting with limited ramp-up time.

Responsibilities

• Lead regular performance reporting on the regulatory system with evidence of strengths and risks.
• Provide robust monitoring and reporting to NZTA leadership and governance bodies (Regulatory, Executive and Board).
• Offer strategic advice and recommendations to senior executives, Boards, governance bodies or Ministers.
• Prepare reporting and briefings tailored for Executive, Board and Ministerial audiences, ensuring timeliness and alignment with NZTA strategy.
• Provide insights and recommendations to senior leaders on areas for improvement.
• Build relationships across regulatory, transport and public sector networks for evidence-informed practice.
• Demonstrate strong stakeholder engagement and influencing at senior levels.
