Job summary

AWA Environmental seeks an Intermediate Civil Engineer – Stormwater to deliver civil design and hydrological assessments for Auckland and nationwide projects. You will contribute to flood modelling, drainage design and environmental solutions within a multidisciplinary water team.

You’ll work with iwi, councils and clients to produce practical, constructible outcomes, lead some workstreams, mentor graduates and help manage project delivery from concept through consent and construction.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with 4–8 years' experience in stormwater or civil infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of hydrology, pipe and open-channel hydraulics, flood risk assessment and water quality.
• Experience designing stormwater infrastructure including pipes, detention systems and wetlands.
• Ability to interpret catchment models and 2D hydraulic modelling outputs for design.
• Proficiency in Civil 3D, GIS and flood modelling tools (HEC-RAS/HEC-HMS/SWMM/SSA).
• Familiarity with NZ standards and Auckland Council guidelines (GD01).
• Ability to prepare clear technical reports and consent documentation.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills; confident with clients and councils.
• Willingness to share knowledge and mentor junior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Stormwater design and pipe networks, culverts, open channels and wetlands.
• Catchment planning and modelling; translate outputs into practical solutions.
• Develop integrated stormwater solutions considering water quality and ecology.
• Prepare technical assessments, calculations, flood reports and consent documentation.
• Lead assigned work, manage budgets and programmes with client engagement.
• Support construction through site inspections and coordination.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor graduates.
