Job summary

Inland Revenue is seeking a Solicitor Level 1 to join the Wellington Legal Services team. You will work across litigation and tax technical work streams, depending on your preference and experience, with opportunities to handle advisory matters and court appearances.

Legal Services is one of the largest government in-house legal teams. The team provides advice, support, dispute resolution, civil litigation, prosecution and tax technical services for a broad range of customers across Inland Revenue.

As a Solicitor you would primarily work in the Advice/Technical Standards or Litigation work streams, depending on your preference and experience. A combination of Advice, Technical Standards and Litigation work may also be possible.

• Advice/Technical Standards roles - Takapuna, Manukau, Hamilton, Wellington or Christchurch
• Litigation - Takapuna, Wellington or Christchurch

About the role - Mō te tūnga

Depending on your preference and experience, you may work on litigation matters, which includes appearing in court and working on civil, criminal and debt matters.

Alternatively, if you are more interested in undertaking tax technical work, you may provide advice and represent the Commissioner in relation to a broad range of matters, including investigations and tax disputes. You may also assist with the drafting and/or reviewing of externally published guidance, determinations, rulings and other materials.

Other key features of the role may include:

• Being part of project teams involved in implementing new legislation
• Working proactively and reactively to help customers to get it right from the start
• Being part of a solutions-focused team that is recognised for providing high levels of customer service
• Contributing to the initiatives of the wider Legal Services team

The salary range for the Solicitor Level 1 role is $81,077 - $107,674 based on a standard 37-hour 55-minute work week. The salary offered will be based on skills and experience assessed during the interview stage. We also have a Flexible Working Policy whereby staff accumulate time credit for any overtime worked.

We are looking for someone who:

• is qualified to practice law in New Zealand and has or is eligible to obtain a New Zealand Law Society practising certificate
• can produce legal work that is thorough, accurate and reliable
• can undertaken legal research, identify solutions, and explain complex matters clearly and concisely
• can build and maintain effective relationships, has a collaborative working style and strong communication skills
• is happy to be part of a team who support and rely on one-another
• is confident and capable at managing their own workload, while also being comfortable seeking guidance and clarification where necessary from more senior colleagues.
