Job description

The role

20 to 25 hours per week | $30 to $35 per hour | Fixed-term, 6 months, with the possibility to extend

Waikato Women's Refuge is looking for a creative, capable and hands‑on Social Media & Content Coordinator to strengthen our digital presence across our core Refuge mahi, our donations and fundraising, and The OPP Stop, our large op shop based in Hamilton East.

This is not a role for someone who simply schedules posts.

We are looking for someone who understands how to find a story, capture it, turn it into strong content, and then make sure that content reaches the right people.

Donations, both goods and giving, are essential to how we sustain our mahi. The OPP Stop turns generously donated goods into pūtea that supports the work of Waikato Women's Refuge and the wāhine and whānau we walk alongside; growing the store, increasing community awareness and driving people through its doors will be an important part of this role. Alongside this, we want someone who can help grow donations and community support for Waikato Women's Refuge more broadly — not just for the shop.

At the same time, there are many stories, initiatives and opportunities across Refuge that need to be communicated thoughtfully, creatively and with respect for the wāhine and whānau at the centre of our mahi.

The role

This is a fixed-term position for 6 months, with the possibility to extend, working approximately 20 to 25 hours each week. You will:

  • regularly visit The OPP Stop and Refuge to gather original photo and video content
  • create engaging reels, posts, stories and short form video
  • manage and grow our Facebook, Instagram and other relevant social channels
  • develop both organic and paid Meta content and campaigns
  • use social media to increase awareness, engagement and foot traffic to The OPP Stop
  • build campaigns and content that grow donations and community support for Waikato Women's Refuge more broadly
  • identify and approach Waikato influencers and content creators who align with our kaupapa
  • develop creative collaborations that introduce Refuge and The OPP Stop to new audiences
  • help generate community campaigns that encourage quality stock donations to The OPP Stop
  • identify stories and opportunities across the wider Refuge mahi that should be shared
  • contribute fresh ideas rather than waiting for a content brief
  • monitor performance and understand what content and advertising is actually delivering results
  • support TikTok content and, ideally, have some knowledge of Google Ads
About you

You will ideally be tertiary qualified in marketing, communications, social media, digital media or a related discipline.

More importantly, you will be creative, confident and highly capable in the digital space.

You will need:

  • strong practical knowledge of Facebook, Instagram and Meta Business Suite
  • experience creating and placing paid Meta advertising
  • excellent short form video and content creation skills
  • an understanding of TikTok and emerging social platforms
  • confidence approaching influencers, businesses and community groups
  • the ability to work independently and generate your own ideas
  • strong written and verbal communication skills
  • an understanding of how content can translate into measurable engagement, foot traffic, donations and revenue
  • sensitivity and good judgement when working within the kaupapa of Women's Refuge

Experience with Google Ads would be an advantage.

Previous professional experience is useful, but we are equally interested in someone earlier in their career who can demonstrate exceptional creativity, strong technical capability and a portfolio of work that shows us what they can do.

You will need to be based in the Waikato and available to be physically present in Hamilton to gather content. This is not a remote social media role.

Why this role matters

This is an opportunity to use your digital skills for something with a very real social impact.

Great content can help us reach more people, grow The OPP Stop and our wider donor base, generate greater pūtea and ultimately strengthen the sustainability of the services Waikato Women's Refuge provides to our hāpori.

If you understand social media, know how to create content people actually want to engage with and have plenty of whakaaro about how we could do things differently, we'd like to hear from you.
