Job summary

Mansfield Group in Christchurch, South Island, is seeking a Hands-on Site Manager for a new build service station project. You will lead the site from mobilisation through to handover, coordinating trades, suppliers, and activities to deliver safely, on programme, and to client standards.

You will enforce health and safety, manage the site team including apprentices, and report progress regularly to the Mansfield Group project team. Occasional away work may be required.

ROLE PURPOSE

The Hands-on Site Manager is responsible for the day to day running of a new build service station project on behalf of Mansfield Group. This role owns the site from mobilisation through to handover, coordinating trades, subcontractors, and suppliers to deliver the works safely, on programme, and to the standard our clients expect. The Site Manager is the main point of contact on site and is accountable for health and safety, quality, and progress reporting throughout the build.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Take full responsibility for site operations on a new build service station, from site establishment through to practical completion and handover.

Plan, coordinate, and supervise all on site trades and subcontractors, with a strong focus on civil works (earthworks, excavation, concrete, underground services), plus fuel system installation, electrical, and building works.

Manage the site programme, track progress against milestones, and escalate delays or risks early.

Enforce site health and safety requirements in line with HSWA 2015 and Mansfield Group site procedures, including inductions, toolbox talks, and hazard management.

Carry out and record quality checks against drawings, specifications, and relevant NZ standards (including fuel system and tank installation requirements).

Manage deliveries, plant, and materials on site, and keep the site secure, tidy, and compliant.

Liaise directly with the client, principal contractor, engineers, and council or regulatory inspectors as required.

Hold regular site meetings and provide clear progress reporting back to the Mansfield Group project team.

Manage variations, RFIs, and site instructions, and keep accurate daily site records.

Support commissioning and testing of the fuel system and associated infrastructure ahead of handover.

Mentor and manage site labour, including any apprentices or junior staff assigned to the project.

Assit on site with site setout & levels.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required: proven track record managing civil works on commercial or infrastructure new build projects, including earthworks, excavation, concrete, and underground services.

Required: proven experience as a Site Manager or Site Supervisor delivering projects from mobilisation through to handover, minimum 3 years.

Must be able to read & understand construction drawings & specifications.

Preferred: experience with fuel system, service station, or tank installation work.

Sound working knowledge of NZ building and construction standards, HSWA 2015, and site safety management systems.

Experience managing subcontractors and multiple trades on a live construction site.

Site Safe/Construct Safe certification (or willingness to obtain) and a current New Zealand driver licence.

Relevant trade or construction management qualification is an advantage, but not essential with sufficient site experience.

Experience with dangerous goods, hazardous substances, or fuel handling requirements is highly regarded.

Must be willing to travel & be comfortable with away work for up to 2 weeks at a time.
