Westpac New Zealand Ltd invites application for a Service Group Owner – Database Engineering. You will lead the Database Engineering function across Infrastructure Services and Digital Workplace, shaping strategy, driving resilience, and delivering secure, modern database capabilities at scale.
You will engage senior stakeholders, foster a high-performing engineering culture, and own the roadmap, budgets and vendor relations in a complex regulatory environment.
The Service Group Owner – Database Engineering leads the Database Engineering function across Infrastructure Services and Digital Workplace, providing clear strategic direction, strong enterprise engagement, and accountable ownership of database services that underpin critical business and technology outcomes. The role is responsible for setting the service group vision, shaping the database engineering roadmap, strengthening operational resilience, and ensuring the function delivers secure, reliable, cost-effective and modern database capabilities across the enterprise. This includes leading through others, aligning priorities across business and technology stakeholders, and building a high-performing engineering culture focused on ownership, continuous improvement and trusted partnership.
Extensive experience leading enterprise technology, infrastructure, platform or database engineering functions in complex, regulated environments. Proven ability to set strategic direction, lead service group planning, manage demand, make trade‑off decisions and deliver measurable business and technology outcomes. Understanding of database technologies, platform operations, engineering practices, resilience, lifecycle management, software currency, automation and service performance. Demonstrated leadership of technical teams, including coaching, capability uplift, role clarity, performance expectations, succession planning and culture development. Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders, negotiate priorities, communicate complex technology issues clearly and build strong enterprise partnerships. Commercial and supplier management experience, including vendor performance, licensing, service commitments, cost optimisation and third-party delivery accountability. Sound knowledge of risk management, security expectations, operational controls, incident management, change management and governance within enterprise technology environments. Relevant tertiary qualification in Technology, Engineering, Business or equivalent practical leadership experience.
