Job summary

Stats NZ is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to shape testing strategies and drive automation across a major data platform project in Christchurch. You will plan, execute functional and non-functional testing, and partner with cross-functional teams to ensure robust, reliable solutions that meet business needs.

The role requires at least 5 years' software testing experience, strong SQL & Python skills, and hands-on automated framework work (Pytest).

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of software testing experience.
• Experience in Test Automation Engineering or similar role.
• Strong practical knowledge of SQL and Python.
• Experience with testing tools and frameworks (Python, Scala, Selenium).
• Hands-on experience building automated testing frameworks (e.g., Pytest).
• Experience with CI/CD practices and tools (Azure DevOps, Git).
• Knowledge of cloud data platforms (Databricks/Snowflake).
• Experience designing and maintaining regression test suites.
• Knowledge of BDD practices and Gherkin scenarios.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement test strategies, plans, and approaches for project delivery.
• Conduct manual and automated testing to verify business requirements and outcomes.
• Collaborate with project teams to foster quality and continuous improvement.
• Acquire domain understanding of Stats NZ processes, surveys, and data domains.
• Identify, track, and manage defects using appropriate tools.
• Perform test reviews to ensure coverage and adherence to standards.
