Job summary

Westpac New Zealand is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead backend delivery for payments experiences. You will design, build, and evolve mobile and web front-ends alongside the payments processing stack, guiding architecture decisions and mentoring engineers.

You will work in a cross-functional squad, applying best practices in design, coding, performance, and security while collaborating with product and platform partners to deliver scalable, customer-centric capabilities.

Qualifications

• At least 5+ years of professional engineering experience in backend development.
• Proficient in Java and Spring Boot.
• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, and deployment automation.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain payments-related backend services.
• Troubleshoot issues and provide after-hours support when required.
• Uphold coding standards, performance, and security practices.

As part of WNZL's digital transformation, you will play a senior role in delivering high-quality payments experiences for our customers. Working within a cross-functional squad, you will design, build, and evolve solutions across mobile, and web front-ends, as well as the experience and capability layers of payments processing.

As a Senior Engineer, you will provide technical leadership, drive engineering best practices, and contribute to solution design and architectural decisions. You will mentor other engineers, collaborate closely with product and platform partners, and ensure the delivery of scalable, resilient, and customer-centric payments capabilities.

• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications and integration solutions
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, and participating in afterhours support when required
• Ensure best practices in design, coding standards, performance, and security
• Create and maintain documentation throughout the SDLC to support transparency and knowledge sharing
• Implement changes aligned with design specifications and evolving business needs
• Analyse recurring issues and lead continuous improvement initiatives
• Maintain and refine support procedures to ensure resilience and minimise downtime
• Ensure compliance with governance standards

• Integrates AI effectively into engineering workflows to improve quality and efficiency, demonstrates strong judgement on appropriate use, and coaches others on responsible AI practices
