Job summary

ABB Pte. Ltd. in New Zealand seeks an experienced Substation Automation Engineer to design, configure and test IEC 61850-based SAS systems across onshore/offshore sites.

You will configure IEDs, generate SCL/MMS/GOOSE data, and prepare signal and interface documentation for switchgear, protection relays, ICSS and PMS. The role requires hands-on experience with ABB 800xA networks (or similar DCS), strong English communication, and ability to work across multi-cultural teams and global

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology with a major in Electrical or Electronics.
• Hands-on experience in automation or substation automation projects across Oil & Gas or power industries, including testing and commissioning.
• Working knowledge of IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE, SCL) and IED configuration tools such as ABB PCM600 and IET600 or equivalent.
• Experience with ABB 800xA networks or comparable DCS platforms (Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa) is an advantage.
• Experience with ABB 800xA with controlbuilder, networking and cyber security principles and third-party communication using Modbus, OPC UA, Profinet and IEC 61850 will be an added advantage.

Responsibilities

• Engineer and configure IEC61850-based SAS including IED configuration, SCL files, MMS reporting and GOOSE messaging.
• Prepare signal lists, IP address lists and interface details from diagrams and IED docs with switchgear, protection relay, ICSS and PMS suppliers.
• Integrate LV/MV switchgear and IEDs using IEC 61850, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet and other protocols.
• Prepare engineering and test documentation including SCD, FAT/SAT procedures, test reports, punch lists and as-built docs.
• Perform internal testing and FAT/SAT at different factories with signal verification, interlocking and comms tests.
• Carry out pre-commissioning, commissioning and SAT at yards and offshore sites with end-to-end checks.
• Troubleshoot comms network and integration issues using tools like Wireshark, IED Scout, ITT600.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engineering and configuring IEC61850-based Electrical Substation Automation Systems (SAS) under the guidance of the lead engineer, including IED configuration, SCL files, MMS reporting and GOOSE messaging.
• Interpreting single-line diagrams, switchgear schematics and IED documentation to prepare signal lists, IP address lists and interface details with switchgear, protection relay, ICSS and PMS suppliers.
• Integrating LV/MV switchgear equipment and IEDs using industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet etc.
• Preparing engineering and test documentation, including SCD files, FAT/SAT procedures, test reports, punch lists and as-built documentation.
• Performing internal testing and factory acceptance tests at different factories, including signal verification, interlocking and communication tests.
• Carrying out pre-commissioning, commissioning and SAT at yards and offshore sites, including end-to-end checks with switchgear, ICSS and PMS.
• Troubleshooting communication network and integration issues using specialized tools (e.g. Wireshark, IED Scout, ITT600).
