Job description

Join Air New Zealand’s TechOps Performance Tribe as a Senior Platform Engineer in our Connected Aircraft squad.

Help shape the future of airline operations by engineering, operating and continuously improving the platforms that keep aircraft connectivity and critical onboard and ground applications secure, reliable and ready for 24/7 operations.

This is a hands-on platform engineering role at the heart of TechOps, the technology function that keeps our aircraft, maintenance teams and airline operations moving. You’ll work across aircraft connectivity, enterprise infrastructure, security and modern Platform Engineering, supporting systems across Boeing and Airbus fleets, including onboard Wi Fi, technical manuals, technical data and associated ground systems.

Why this role

Help modernize how Air New Zealand’s TechOps capabilities support the airline, connecting aircraft, people and ground systems through automation, security, CI/CD and modern engineering practices. You’ll have real operational impact while helping shape platform direction, strengthen resilience and improve how critical services are delivered.

The environment is predominantly Windows-based, with AWS and some Linux across private network and cloud environments. You’ll bring strong AWS, security infrastructure and PKI expertise, along with scripting, automation and CI/CD skills, to improve reliability, security and operational consistency. Strong operational ownership, hands-on troubleshooting and collaboration across Engineering, Digital and vendor partners are key to success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer and support secure, reliable Windows platforms, AWS and hybrid infrastructure for Connected Aircraft applications and associated ground systems, using Infrastructure as Code and secure engineering practices.
  • Provide Level 2 and Level 3 support for OEM Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including aircraft maintenance laptops, device configuration, application integration, troubleshooting and lifecycle management.
  • Build and improve CI/CD, source control, automated testing and repeatable deployment practices for infrastructure, configuration and application changes.
  • Engineer and maintain security and identity infrastructure including PKI, certificate lifecycle management, TLS, access controls and secure connectivity.
  • Develop PowerShell, Python, Shell or similar automation to reduce manual work and improve platform reliability, consistency and supportability.
  • Own monitoring, observability, incident response, problem management and production readiness for business-critical services in a 24/7 environment, including participation in an on-call roster.
  • Lead testing, validation and production deployment of aircraft application and platform changes, and work across Engineering, Digital and vendor partners to troubleshoot complex issues through to resolution.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring, contributing to platform engineering practices that strengthen resilience, automation and service outcomes.

What You Will Bring

  • Significant senior platform, infrastructure, cloud engineering or Site Reliability Engineering experience in enterprise environments, with strong operational ownership and troubleshooting capability.
  • Strong hands-on Windows Server engineering and business-critical application support experience. Linux administration and troubleshooting experience is advantageous, but not essential.
  • Strong hands-on AWS infrastructure experience and secure cloud/hybrid architecture knowledge, including Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation or equivalent.
  • Strong security and identity infrastructure experience, particularly PKI, certificate lifecycle management, TLS, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, identity and access management and secure network connectivity.
  • Strong scripting and automation capability using PowerShell, Python, Shell or similar technologies, plus CI/CD experience, preferably Azure DevOps, across infrastructure, configuration and application delivery.
  • Strong networking fundamentals including DNS, DHCP, firewalls, routing, load balancing and secure connectivity, with monitoring and observability experience using tools such as Splunk and AWS services.
  • Experience supporting business-critical systems in a 24/7 environment, including incident response, root cause analysis and effective collaboration with technical, business and vendor stakeholders.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services such as Entra ID, Enterprise Applications and Intune is advantageous.

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent practical experience.
  • Relevant cloud, networking or security certifications are advantageous, including Cisco or equivalent network connectivity certifications.
  • Solution Architecture or broader technical design experience is beneficial.
