Job summary

Department of Corrections NZ is seeking an experienced HR leader to guide a large, diverse HR portfolio across multiple sites. You will lead a team of HR professionals delivering strategic and operational people support to managers across a broad, geographically dispersed region, including six prisons and frontline directorates of Ara Poutama Aotearoa.

You will provide expert guidance on complex employment matters, balance strategic leadership with hands-on problem solving, and build capability

Qualifications

Proven experience leading, coaching, and developing high-performing HR teams.
Extensive employment relations experience, including handling complex matters in a unionised environment.
Strong stakeholder management with the ability to influence senior leaders.
Demonstrated resilience, sound judgement, and the ability to prioritise in fast-paced settings.
Systems-thinking mindset with a track record of improving processes and outcomes.

Responsibilities

Lead a large HR portfolio across six prisons and front-line directorates.
Provide trusted strategic and operational people advice to managers across a dispersed region.
Navigate complex employment matters and high-risk cases within a unionised environment.
Develop and sustain a high-performing, connected team and organisational capability.
