Job summary

Beca Group in Tauranga is seeking a Senior Engineering Geologist or Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our regional team, focusing on geotechnical asset management. You will plan and deliver projects, lead field investigations, and develop 2D/3D ground models to inform design and risk assessments.

Applicants should hold a qualified Engineering Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer credential (postgraduate preferred) with proven consulting experience, and be capable of leading multidisciplinary

  • Qualified Engineering Geologist (ideally with a relevant postgraduate qualification) or Geotechnical Engineer with proven consulting/contracting experience.
  • Strong technical capability and proactive problem solving.

  • Produce plans, reports, proposals and specifications to meet client requirements.
  • Direct and undertake desk-based assessments of sites and studies of aerial photographs and published data to guide investigation and design.
  • Scope and manage field investigations, including drilling crews and laboratory testing.
  • Direct field investigations including borehole logging, sampling and monitoring.
  • Develop 2D and 3D ground models to inform problem definition and design.
  • Undertake data analysis and slope stability modelling.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and build client relationships to secure opportunities.

To be part of our growth in the region, we are looking for a Senior Engineering Geologist or Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join us in Tauranga. This role will have a focus on geotechnical asset management.

Responsibilities
  • Apply your knowledge and judgment to plan and deliver projects.
  • Produce plans, reports, proposals and specifications to meet client requirements.
  • Direct and undertake desk‑based assessments of sites or site areas, including studies of aerial photographs, research and review of published data, to guide investigation and design for projects.
  • Scope and manage field investigations, including commissioning of drilling crews and organising laboratory testing to expand the understanding of a site or region or as a basis for hazard or risk evaluation.
  • Direct field investigations including field mapping, direction of drilling crews, detailed logging of boreholes, sampling and monitoring, hand augering and logging of test pits.
  • Develop 2D and 3D ground models using available data to inform problem definition and design.
  • Undertake computer‑aided data analysis and evaluation, e.g. slope stability modelling.
  • Carry out field reconnaissance of sites featuring natural hazards through scheduled inspections or in response to slips, provide advice and develop designs for remediation solutions, working closely with the client to meet their objectives.
  • Present technical deliverables through clear written and oral communication.
  • Work on projects from inception to completion, scoping, planning and resourcing effectively to deliver to programme and budget.
  • Lead and manage multi‑disciplinary teams across packages.
  • Build strong internal and external relationships and assist senior members of the business to secure additional business opportunities.

  • Qualified Engineering Geologist (ideally with a relevant postgraduate qualification) or Geotechnical Engineer with proven experience in a consulting or contracting environment.
  • Strong technical capability, sound engineering judgment, and a proactive approach to solving complex problems.
  • Curious and commercially aware; enjoys exploring challenges from different perspectives and can translate technical concepts into practical, client‑focused solutions.
  • Passionate about continual learning, enjoys sharing knowledge with others, and brings fresh thinking to the team.
  • Confident working independently while also collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contributing to project delivery and helping to develop less experienced team members.
