Job summary

WM New Zealand is seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer – Electrical and Control Automation to join our Engineering and Asset Management team. You will lead electrical aspects of national capital projects, review designs, and ensure safe, reliable plant performance.

The role includes troubleshooting, commissioning, lifecycle planning, and contractor management across diverse sites, with travel across New Zealand.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
8+ years in industrial, manufacturing, utilities or heavy industry environments.
Strong knowledge of electrical power systems, switchgear and protection.
Experience delivering electrical projects and plant upgrades.
Ability to troubleshoot, perform root cause analysis and manage contractors.
Solid understanding of automation: PLCs, SCADA, HMI, instrumentation and control systems.
Ability to assess risk and balance safety, reliability and cost.

Responsibilities

Provide senior technical leadership for electrical, controls and automation systems.
Lead electrical aspects of capital projects from concept to commissioning and handover.
Develop specifications, scopes of work and engineering standards for electrical assets.
Review electrical designs, power distribution, motor control centers and protection.
Lead reliability improvement initiatives and perform defect elimination.
Root cause analysis for major plant failures and implement corrective actions.
Support generators, switchgear, MCCs, VSDs and industrial control systems.
Manage contractors, consultants and equipment suppliers for project delivery.
Lead or support commissioning, testing and handover activities.
Identify opportunities to improve reliability, energy efficiency and performance.
