Job summary

WorkSafe New Zealand is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to apply advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI to regulatory and organizational challenges. You will design and deliver models and AI products that inform decision-making and improve risk insights across New Zealand workplaces.

You will collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to deploy end-to-end data science solutions, mentor others, and contribute to the development of AI capabilities such as RAG and

Qualifications

• Strong Python (or R) and SQL skills.
• Experience with LLM-based solutions (RAG, agents or structured extraction).
• Cloud experience (Azure preferred) and MLOps practices.
• Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Experience mentoring others or lifting technical practice within a team.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and validate advanced analytical models and AI solutions.
• Apply ML/AI techniques to complex problems and datasets.
• Design evaluation approaches for model outputs and performance measures.
• Support transition of models into production and monitor performance.
• Partner with data engineers and analysts to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Mentor team members and lift technical practice.
