Job summary

WorkSafe New Zealand | Mahi Haumaru Aotearoa is seeking a Data Scientist to apply advanced analytics, ML and AI to regulatory and organisational challenges. You will work with data engineers, analysts and stakeholders to design and deliver models and AI products that inform decision-making and improve outcomes for NZ workplaces.

You will tackle risk-targeting projects and AI agents, build data foundations, and drive production readiness from modelling to deployment, monitoring and ongoing

Qualifications

• End-to-end data science project delivery from problem to deployment.
• Strong Python or R and SQL with ML libraries.
• Experience with or interest in LLM-based solutions (RAG, agents, extraction).
• Ability to explain concepts, evidence, limitations and uncertainty to non-technical audiences.
• Willingness to learn modern cloud and MLOps tools within the Azure ecosystem.
• Relevant degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, CS or related field.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and validate advanced analytical models and AI solutions
• Apply statistical, ML and AI techniques including LLM-based approaches
• Design evaluation approaches for model outputs with test sets and reviews
• Support transition of models into operational use and monitor performance
• Partner with data engineers, analysts and other specialists to deliver end-to-end solutions
• Translate findings into practical insights for decision-makers
