Job summary

Synechron is seeking a Senior Data Engineer in Auckland to lead data migration, ETL/ELT development, and data warehousing initiatives. You will design scalable pipelines, optimize performance, and ensure data quality across large enterprise datasets.

You will collaborate with architects, DBAs, analysts, and developers to deliver end-to-end data solutions within modern cloud and on-prem environments. Strong SQL, modeling, and governance experience are essential.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer with strong expertise in data migration, data warehousing, and ETL/ELT development to lead the design, development, and delivery of enterprise data solutions. This role will be responsible for migrating data from legacy and heterogeneous source systems into modern data warehouse platforms, building scalable ETL/ELT pipelines, and ensuring high data quality, integrity, and performance.

The ideal candidate will have deep technical knowledge of ETL frameworks, strong SQL and data modeling skills, and proven experience delivering complex data migration and transformation initiatives in enterprise environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end data migration projects, including source analysis, data mapping, transformation, validation, reconciliation, and cutover support.
• Design, develop, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using enterprise ETL and data integration tools.
• Build and enhance enterprise data warehouse and data mart solutions to support reporting, analytics, and business intelligence.
• Analyze legacy source systems and define migration strategies for structured and semi-structured data.
• Work closely with business stakeholders, architects, DBAs, analysts, and developers to gather requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
• Develop and maintain source-to-target mappings, transformation rules, and migration documentation.
• Ensure data quality, completeness, consistency, and reconciliation throughout migration and integration processes.
• Optimize ETL jobs, SQL queries, and database performance for large-scale data loads and ongoing operations.
• Support testing activities including unit testing, system integration testing, UAT, and production validation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve data integration, migration, and performance issues.
• Establish and promote best practices for ETL development, migration governance, release management, and operational support.
• Mentor junior data engineers and provide technical leadership across the data engineering team.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 5+ years of experience in data engineering, ETL development, data integration, or data warehousing roles.
• Proven experience delivering data migration projects involving legacy systems, warehouse modernization, cloud migrations, or platform transitions.
• Strong expertise in SQL and relational databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, or similar.
• Deep understanding of data warehousing concepts, including dimensional modeling, star schemas, and historical data management.
• Experience with data profiling, cleansing, transformation, reconciliation, and validation.
• Strong knowledge of ETL/ELT architecture, batch processing, orchestration, and data integration best practices.
• Ability to work with complex data structures and high-volume datasets.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud data platforms such as AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Databricks, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Experience with ETL tools such as Informatica, Talend, DataStage, SSIS, AWS Glue, Matillion, dbt, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with modern analytics and BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik.
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Shell Scripting.
• Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, audit controls, and compliance requirements.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery teams.
• Prior experience in large-scale enterprise transformation or modernization programs.
• Banking, Payments, Cards, or Financial Services domain experience is highly desirable.
