Job summary

Financial Markets Authority – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko seeks a Senior Adviser to lead complex misconduct inquiries and assessments across New Zealand’s financial sector from Auckland or Wellington. You will apply regulatory expertise, sound judgment and rigorous analysis to support proportionate responses and fair outcomes for consumers and markets.

You’ll collaborate with multiple FMA teams, prepare high-quality reports for senior stakeholders, and contribute to capability building and mentoring

Qualifications

  • Significant experience in a regulatory, legal, audit, investigations, compliance, risk or financial services environment.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information, exercise sound judgement and make evidence-based recommendations.
  • Experience leading inquiries, investigations, assessments or other complex matters involving competing priorities and ambiguity.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving capability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage a range of stakeholders.

Te Tūranga | The Role

As a Senior Adviser in our Perimeter & Response team, you'll play a key role in assessing suspected misconduct and regulatory breaches across Aotearoa’s financial sector, helping to determine the most effective regulatory response to achieve fair outcomes for consumers and markets. You'll work on complex and often high-profile matters, applying strong judgement, analytical thinking and regulatory expertise to support the FMA's response to potential harm and misconduct.

Working as part of a collaborative and highly capable team based in Auckland or Wellington, you’ll:

  • Lead complex misconduct inquiries and assessments involving licensed and unlicensed market participants.
  • Analyse information, identify potential harms, and make well-reasoned recommendations on appropriate regulatory responses.
  • Work closely with other FMA teams to achieve effective regulatory outcomes.

The appointing salary range for this role is $120,000 - $140,000 plus 4% KiwiSaver and the benefits outlined above. Final offers will reflect experience, skills, and internal equity.
