We are a team of talented and enthusiastic individuals looking for a Rural Medicine Specialist to join us in providing emergency and inpatient care to the Taumarunui community. The role involves working with varied presentations in our emergency department and on the inpatient ward, providing a high degree of emergency and ongoing care in an independent manner. You will offer preventive, therapeutic and diagnostic interventions, perform procedural skills, seek appropriate consultation from health professionals at the tertiary hospital, develop rapport and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and accurately synthesize relevant information from patients, families and other professionals.
Taumarunui Hospital is a vital rural hospital, providing 24/7 emergency care to around 10,000 patients each year, supported by a 10‑bed inpatient ward. High‑acuity patients are transferred to Waikato Hospital via air and road retrieval services when specialist care is required. The hospital offers on‑site laboratory and radiology services, visiting specialist outpatient clinics, an independent general practice, and a two‑bed primary birthing unit led by a dedicated midwifery team. Working within the innovative Taumarunui Integrated Health Care model, the hospital is committed to delivering connected, patient‑centred care.
You will join a highly supportive senior medical team with excellent mentoring and plentiful opportunities to develop emergency procedures skills and advance your career. Senior Medical Officers receive up to two weeks of fully funded continuing medical education each year and six weeks of annual leave. The service places a strong emphasis on collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where people are encouraged to grow and thrive.
