Job summary

We are looking for a Resource Advisor or Senior Resource Advisor to join our dedicated Environmental Regulation team based in our modern office in Masterton.

This is an excellent opportunity to work across consenting, compliance and enforcement activities while helping deliver positive environmental outcomes for the Wellington region. You'll be joining a friendly, supportive team of people who are passionate about doing great work for our extraordinary region.

The role may be appointed at either Resource Advisor or Senior Resource Advisor level, depending on the skills, experience and capabilities of the successful candidate.

Whether you are an experienced Resource Advisor looking to expand your expertise and influence, or a Senior Resource Advisor looking to provide technical leadership and mentor others, we'd love to hear from you.

About the role:

As a Resource Advisor within the Rural Activities team, you will play an important role in delivering our responsibilities under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). Your work will be varied and rewarding, including:

  • processing resource consent applications
  • providing advice and guidance on natural resource management
  • undertaking compliance inspections and monitoring activities
  • auditing self-monitoring data and reports
  • responding to environmental incidents, carrying out investigations and enforcement action
  • working collaboratively with landowners, industry, iwi, community groups and stakeholders

You will be adept at balancing the interests of a diverse range of customers while developing practical and effective solutions to complex resource management issues.

You will also be a strong communicator with excellent relationship-building skills and a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.

Skills and experience required:

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Practical experience working within the RMA and planning disciplines.
  • Experience gained within local government, central government, consulting, industry, iwi, community organisations or other regulatory environments.
  • A solutions-focused and collaborative working style, with experience mentoring and sharing your ideas and expertise with others.
  • Excellent interpersonal, engagement and relationship management skills.
  • Resilience, flexibility, and an ability to work with ambiguity and change.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, to prioritise competing commitments and proactively manage customer expectations.
  • An analytical mind to critically review reports, plans and other technical documents, and to suggest improvements to our practices.
  • The ability to remain focussed on outcomes during the RMA process.
  • An understanding of how to influence behaviour change.
  • A proven track record of successfully delivering to customers.

To be considered for appointment at Senior Resource Advisor level, you will bring at least five years' relevant experience in a local government or regulatory environment, ideally within regional consenting and compliance. You will also demonstrate strong technical capability, leadership skills, effective communication, and experience mentoring and supporting others.

The total remuneration for these positions, including all benefits, is:

Resource Advisor: $79,995 - $119,993, with a midpoint of $99,994

Senior Resource Advisor: $99,557 - $149,336, with a midpoint of $124,446

Starting remuneration will depend on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
