Job summary

The University of Auckland is seeking a compassionate Animal Technician to join the Liggins Institute on an 8-month fixed-term basis, working full-time in Auckland. You will care for research animals, assist with study procedures and maintain accurate records under supervision.

Full training will be provided, and the role offers a competitive salary between $63,600 and $79,300, commensurate with experience, with five weeks of annual leave and flexible employment practices.

Qualifications

• Experience caring for animals, ideally in a research or veterinary setting.
• Knowledge of animal welfare principles and regulations.
• Strong attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Excellent communication and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
• Previous experience with laboratory animals is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care, feeding, weighing and welfare monitoring of research animals.
• Maintain accurate records, databases and study documentation.
• Assist with sample collection, blood sampling and metabolic assessments.
• Prepare treatments, consumables and study materials.
• Support behavioural, physiological and metabolic testing activities.
• Maintain hygiene, animal husbandry and facility compliance.
• Contribute to health and safety practices and attend team meetings.
