Job description

Bring your nursing skills to communities where relationships matter. Join Whānau Āwhina Plunket in the Mid to Far North and work alongside whānau to give their tamariki the best possible start in life.

Starting out, returning home or ready for a new direction? We welcome new graduates and experienced nurses who want to build a meaningful career in community health.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We have a permanent Registered Nurse opportunit y across the Mid to Far North , with hours ranging from 0.6 FTE to full-time.

This is nursing that takes you into the everyday lives of whānau. Working in homes and clinics, you’ll support pēpi and tamariki from birth to five years through comprehensive assessments, health education and care planning.

You might be helping a parent understand their baby’s development, discussing feeding or sleep, identifying a health concern, or coordinating support with other services. Each interaction is an opportunity to listen, build confidence and respond to the needs and aspirations of whānau.

Working across rural communities brings variety and requires thoughtful clinical judgement, good organisation and an adaptable approach. You’ll work alongside Plunket colleagues and develop relationships with local health and community services to help whānau access the care they need.

For a new graduate, this is an opportunity to develop a strong foundation in child and whānau health. For an experienced nurse, it offers scope to apply your knowledge, deepen your community practice and contribute to better outcomes across Te Tai Tokerau .

You take time to understand people and their circumstances. You recognise the knowledge and strengths within whānau, and work in partnership with them rather than assuming what they need.

You’ll be comfortable learning, asking questions and seeking advice, while developing or bringing the confidence to manage your nursing practice. You understand that improving access to care involves recognising barriers and working with whānau and other services to address them.

A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, cultural safety and equitable health outcomes is central to this mahi. Local knowledge and existing community connections are valuable, and we also welcome nurses who are new to the area and willing to listen, learn and build relationships.

You will need:

  • Current Nursing Council registration and APC, or be actively working towards obtaining them. This includes new graduates who are awaiting State Finals, and nurses returning to practice.
  • A full driver’s licence and willingness to drive between communities for whānau visits.
  • Clear communication skills and confidence using clinical computer systems.
  • A commitment to ongoing learning, including postgraduate study in Well Child Tamariki Ora (supported by us!).

You don’t need to have worked for Plunket before. Applications are welcome from new graduates and nurses with experience across a range of clinical settings.

  • The opportunity to build lasting relationships with whānau and contribute to the wellbeing of your community.
  • Funded postgraduate study in Well Child Tamariki Ora.
  • Eligible nurses working in Well Child Tamariki Ora at Plunket may qualify for financial incentives through Health New Zealand’s Voluntary Bonding Scheme.
  • Varied community nursing practice that develops your clinical judgement and coordination of care skills.
  • Opportunities to explore specialist interests and future pathways in education or leadership.
  • Permanent opportunities from 0.6 FTE to full-time.
A place to put down roots

From the Bay of Islands and Hokianga to the beaches of the Far North, the wider region offers plenty to explore outside work. Swimming, fishing, coastal walks and cycling can all be part of your days off, alongside discovering the area’s history and local communities.

Whether you’re looking to return to your roots or make a new home in the north, this is a chance to connect your career with a place and community that matter to you.
