Job summary

Christchurch City Council invites applicants for a hands-on Park Ranger role based at Halswell Quarry HQ. You will work in diverse parks, wetlands and open spaces, focusing on biodiversity, restoration and asset maintenance alongside a small, committed team.

The position emphasizes practical field skills, safe operations of light and heavy equipment, and strong community engagement with volunteers and stakeholders. Monday–Friday, full-time, based in Christchurch.

Develop your career as a professional Park Ranger and become part of the team looking after some of the diverse natural and open space areas of Christchurch. From the wild beauty of Banks Peninsula to the nationally significant wetlands of coastal Christchurch, our residents can enjoy some of the most spectacular, accessible, and ecologically important parks in the country.

We are seeking motivated, field‑based Rangers to work as part of a small team focused on the ongoing care, restoration and enhancement of Christchurch’s natural environments.

Your work will include:

• Biodiversity management and ecological enhancement
• Mowing and amenity maintenance
• Wetland restoration and management
• Native planting and restoration work
• Supporting biodiversity and conservation outcomes
• Maintaining significant recreational, natural and wetland assets
• Supporting environmental and ecological management activities within high‑use recreation areas

This is a practical, hands‑on role, and you’ll use a range of light and heavy equipment and tools as part of your day‑to‑day work.

You’ll work within our Council systems, including health and safety and asset management systems, and collaborate with the wider Regional Parks team to deliver conservation, recreation and environmental outcomes.

You’ll also have the opportunity to engage with a range of community members and stakeholders, including:

• Mana whenua
• Environmental groups

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, is physically fit, and takes pride in caring for natural and recreational spaces. You’ll be confident working both independently and as part of a small team, with the ability to plan, problem solve, communicate effectively and take action when required.

You’ll bring:

• Proven experience in grounds and amenity maintenance, particularly turf, gardens, restoration sites or wetland environments
• Practical, hands‑on field skills, including mowing, spraying, restoration work and wetland management
• Confidence using a range of light and heavy equipment and tools
• The ability to work safely within Council systems and processes, including health and safety and asset management
• Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to engage confidently with people from a range of backgrounds
• A personable and approachable nature, with the ability to build positive relationships with volunteers, community groups and environmental stakeholders
• The ability to work collaboratively with other Rangers and the wider Regional Parks team

Experience in biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, native planting programmes, pest plant control or ecological enhancement projects would be highly regarded.

Most importantly, you’ll have a genuine commitment to recreation management, environmental stewardship and protecting Christchurch’s unique natural environments.

• Location - This position is primarily based at theHalswell Quarry H.Q
• Salary-The salary band for this position goes from $32.52 to $36.13 per hour. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
