Job summary

Department of Conservation NZ in Rangiora/Arthur's Pass region is seeking a Ranger - Community (Monitoring) on a fixed-term basis. You will connect iwi, volunteers, groups and partners to grow community conservation efforts and support statutory land management processes.

You will spend initial months in Rangiora for onboarding before moving to Arthur's Pass, with accommodation provided during the transition. A weekend roster applies and a NZ driver licence is required.

Qualifications

• Experience in statutory, regulatory, enforcement, or compliance settings.
• Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple workstreams and competing priorities.
• Full New Zealand driver licence.

Responsibilities

• Process permissions and assist with concession and authorisation processes.
• Undertake monitoring and compliance activities to support appropriate use of public conservation land.
• Monitor activities on public conservation land, including maintaining records and databases.
• Build and maintain relationships with iwi, community groups, businesses, councils and partners.
• Provide field support for statutory land management functions, including site visits and inspections.
• Identify opportunities to grow conservation outcomes through collaboration and community involvement.
• Provide administrative, liaison and advocacy support to projects involving iwi, businesses and the wider community.
• Occasionally undertake amenity maintenance tasks to keep visitor facilities safe and presentable.

Mō te tūranga | About the role
As Ranger Community (Monitoring), you'll play a key role in connecting people with conservation. Working with iwi, volunteers, community groups, businesses, councils and conservation partners, you'll help grow community participation in conservation and support projects that create lasting benefits for nature across the Eastern South Island region. You'll also contribute to statutory processes that support the effective management of public conservation land.

The role will focus on:

• processing permissions and assisting with concession and authorisation processes
• undertaking monitoring and compliance activities to support appropriate use of public conservation land
• monitoring commercial and private activities on public conservation land, including maintaining accurate records and database information
• building and maintaining effective relationships with iwi, community groups, volunteers, businesses, councils and conservation partners to support, coordinate and grow community-led conservation projects, partnerships and participation
• providing field support for statutory land management functions, including site visits and inspections
• identifying opportunities to grow conservation outcomes through collaboration and community involvement
• providing administrative, liaison and advocacy support to projects involving iwi, businesses and the wider community
• undertaking occasional amenity maintenance tasks to help ensure visitor facilities and sites remain safe, functional and well presented
  

To support a successful start, you'll spend your first two to three months based in Rangiora, where you'll receive onboarding and training. You'll then transition to our Arthur's Pass office for approximately three to four months, with accommodation provided during this period. The role also involves participating in a roster that includes one weekend day.

With strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative approach, you'll be comfortable engaging with community groups, iwi, volunteers, local authorities, businesses, and other stakeholders to support positive conservation outcomes.

If you have some of the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

• highly organised, with strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams and competing priorities
• experience working within statutory, regulatory, enforcement, or compliance settings, with a strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes, particularly those relating to the Resource Management Act and public conservation land management
• proactive and solutions-focused, with the ability to prioritise work and make sound decisions
• passion for conservation and enabling others to contribute to positive conservation outcomes
• proven ability to build effective relationships and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including iwi, community groups, local authorities, businesses, and conservation organisations
• experience coordinating community projects
• systems savvy, with strong attention to detail
• a people person, you're keen to get out of the office to engage with stakeholders, attend meetings, and undertake site visits
• full New Zealand driver licence
