Job summary

Downer seeks a Project Engineer Mechanical in Wellington, on a fixed-term contract to December 2027, to lead installation, integration, testing and commissioning of critical mechanical systems on a major infrastructure project.

You will coordinate across civil, structural, and electrical interfaces, ensuring safety, quality and alignment with project specifications while delivering on schedule within a collaborative, site-based team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 3-7 years' experience in mechanical construction or infrastructure projects.
• Experience in installation of mechanical plant such as pumps, piping, or process systems.
• Strong understanding of commissioning and testing processes.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• A strong commitment to safety, quality, and compliance.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Project Engineer Mechanical to join our team in Wellington, supporting the successful delivery of a complex infrastructure project.
In this role, you will coordinate and oversee the installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of critical mechanical systems including thermal drying equipment, conveyors, pumps, pipework, and associated process plant.
You will play a key role in ensuring all mechanical works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with project specifications while managing interfaces across civil, structural, and electrical disciplines to achieve seamless project execution.

What We Are Looking For

We're looking for a motivated and capable mechanical engineer who thrives in a site-based delivery environment and enjoys working across multidisciplinary teams.

You will bring:

• A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 3-7 years' experience in mechanical construction or infrastructure projects
• Experience in installation of mechanical plant such as pumps, piping, or process systems
• Strong understanding of commissioning and testing processes
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
• A strong commitment to safety, quality, and compliance

Highly regarded:

• Experience in water, wastewater, or process plant projects
• Exposure to multi-disciplinary coordination across mechanical, civil, and electrical systems
• Experience with procurement, subcontractor management, and OEM/vendor coordination
• Involvement in commissioning and start-up of process systems
