About the opportunity

Do you enjoy uncovering unmet needs and turning them into practical solutions?

Our Surgery division is looking for someone to join a team discovering and exploring new surgical opportunities. The focus is on medical devices that could become products within the next few years.

Rather than working on a specific product or concept, you'll seek out clinical problems worth solving, come up with possible solutions, then build prototypes and trial them to assess which have real potential. You'll be part of a small team, supported by the wider Surgery division, with opportunities to engage with clinicians as ideas develop.

About you

You're practical and curious, and you like getting hands-on. You're comfortable when the problem isn't clearly defined, and you don't wait to be told what to do. You'll have:

  • A hands-on approach to solving problems, shown through experience making or building things, at work or outside it. This matters more to us than your degree. We welcome people from many backgrounds, including engineering, applied physics, industrial design, biomedical science, and clinical or operating-theatre roles
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience
  • The ability to take an open-ended problem, work out what matters most, and find practical ways to move it forward.

It would be great if you also have experience in:

  • Building and testing physical prototypes
  • Surgery or the operating theatre
  • Working with clinicians
  • Reviewing clinical literature
  • Data analysis using scripting or analytical tools
  • Medical device development, including intellectual property, manufacturability, usability and regulatory requirements.
