Job description

$75,000 - $90,000 + Medical + Fitness Subsidy

There's a lot that goes into building a solar farm, and getting the right equipment and materials to site at the right time is a big part of making it happen.

With an expanding portfolio of solar projects across New Zealand, Lightyears Solar is looking for a Procurement Officer who enjoys juggling multiple priorities, working with suppliers (on and off shore) and keeping things moving. If you're commercially minded, proactive and enjoy finding solutions, this is an opportunity to put your skills to work in an industry that's helping shape New Zealand's energy future.

About Lightyears

Lightyears is a New Zealand-owned solar energy company on an ambitious growth journey. What started as a small development venture has grown into a business covering everything from development and design through to construction, maintenance and power generation.

Still founder-led, Lightyears has kept its down-to-earth, collaborative culture. It's a place where good ideas are welcomed, people roll up their sleeves, and no one is too precious about doing things differently.

Currently based in Eden Terrace, Lightyears has outgrown its office space and will be moving to new premises in Newmarket in February 2027.

The opportunity

You'll coordinate the procurement of equipment and materials for Lightyears' solar farm projects across New Zealand, from the point that engineering designs become purchasing requirements, through to equipment arriving on site.

Working closely with Engineering Design, Project Managers, Finance and external suppliers, you'll keep everyone informed and help avoid last-minute surprises. With several projects running at once, you'll need to switch between priorities comfortably, stay across the detail and follow things through.

Some of what you'll be doing:

  • Working with engineers to understand solar design specifications, equipment requirements and design changes.
  • Sourcing equipment, comparing supplier quotations and managing purchase orders.
  • Coordinating pricing discussions and purchasing recommendations, escalating significant commercial decisions for approval.
  • Managing day-to-day supplier relationships, tracking production schedules and following up on delays.
  • Coordinating international freight, shipping documentation and deliveries to site.
  • Tracking orders, costs and delivery schedules to keep construction projects on track.

About you

You have 2-3 years' experience in procurement, purchasing or logistics, ideally within an engineering, construction, infrastructure, manufacturing or other technical environment.

You enjoy the commercial side of purchasing, but you're equally happy getting into the detail, chasing up suppliers and working through the practical challenges of getting equipment delivered.

You're naturally organised, proactive and someone who takes pride in following things through.

You'll also bring:

  • Experience managing supplier quotations, purchase orders and purchasing records.
  • Confidence communicating with suppliers, discussing pricing and working with different teams to get things sorted.
  • A strong technical aptitude. You're comfortable interpreting engineering drawings, technical specifications and bills of materials, and discussing equipment requirements with engineers and suppliers. You don't need an engineering qualification, but you do need the confidence to ask questions and spot potential issues.
  • Good commercial judgement, an eye for detail and the ability to spot potential costs, risks or delays.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple orders, suppliers and deadlines.
  • Confidence with spreadsheets, trackers and document management systems.
  • A practical approach to problem-solving and the initiative to suggest better ways of working.

Most importantly, you're curious, keen to learn and excited about the opportunity to broaden your experience in a growing renewable energy business.

Why Lightyears?

You'll be joining a scaling business with a flat structure, where you'll have access to experienced people, your ideas will be heard, and you'll take ownership of your work. As Lightyears continues to grow, you'll also have the opportunity to help shape the systems and processes behind how procurement gets done.

On top of that, you'll enjoy funded health insurance, subsidised fitness, flexible start/finish times and a genuinely supportive and engaged team.

Sound like your kind of opportunity? We'd love to hear from you.

To apply for this opportunity, you must be a New Zealand Citizen, Resident, or have already secured the right to work in New Zealand and therefore hold a valid Work Visa.
