Job summary

Veolia Australia & New Zealand is seeking a Process Engineer (Energy Manager) to join the Moa Point Sludge Minimisation Facility in Wellington. You will optimise energy, utility and chemical use while driving process improvements and energy management strategies to meet performance and sustainability targets.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical/Process Engineering or equivalent.
  • Process optimisation experience in the wastewater industry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist process engineering advice across SMF, Moa Point WWTP, and Western WWTP.
  • Conduct and maintain energy balances for digestion systems.
  • Implement process control improvements.
  • Monitor and optimise utility and chemical consumption.
  • Lead technical improvement projects.
  • Create and maintain process benchmarking systems.

The Opportunity

Veolia NZ is seeking an experienced Process Engineer (Energy Manager) to join our team at the Moa Point Sludge Minimisation Facility (SMF) in Wellington. This is a unique opportunity to be part of New Zealand's first Thermal Hydrolysis Process technology facility.

In this role, you'll continuously monitor and optimize energy, utility, and chemical consumption across the SMF while developing and implementing process improvements. You'll maximize operational efficiency through process control optimization and energy management strategies, ensuring the facility meets its performance and sustainability targets. What you'll be responsible for
Process Optimisation
  • Provide specialist process engineering advice across SMF, Moa Point WWTP, and Western WWTP
  • Conduct and maintain energy balances for digestion systems
  • Implement process control improvements
  • Monitor and optimise utility and chemical consumption
  • Lead technical improvement projects
  • Create and maintain process benchmarking systems
Energy Management
  • Develop and implement long-term energy management strategies
  • Monitor and analyse energy consumption patterns across all facilities
  • Lead energy efficiency initiatives and sustainability projects
  • Engage with stakeholders on energy-related matters
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams on energy-related improvements
  • Prepare energy performance reports
  • Identify opportunities for energy optimisation
Technical Support
  • Provide specialist process engineering advice
  • Support commissioning and optimisation activities
  • Develop and review SOP procedures
  • Coordinate with operations teams on process improvements
  • Provide technical training to operations staff
  • Troubleshoot complex process issues
Safety and Compliance
  • Drive compliance with contractual obligations, resource consent requirements, and H&S/environmental regulations
  • Promote positive safety behaviors and develop a proactive safety culture
  • Participate in safety audits and risk assessments
  • Report and investigate safety/environmental hazards, near misses, and incidents
  • Contribute to Health and Safety, Quality Assurance, and Environmental Management Systems
  • Comply with Veolia's Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Policy Statements
  • Participate in toolbox and H&S meetings
What you'll need to be successful
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Chemical/Process Engineering or equivalent
  • Process optimisation experience in the wastewater industry
  • Energy management expertise
  • Experience with process control optimization
  • Proven problem-solving skills with documented methodologies
  • Experience with CMMS systems
  • Beneficial: Experience with wastewater treatment processes
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
  • Post-graduate qualification in water/wastewater treatment
  • Demonstrated experience with anaerobic digestion and thermal drying processes
  • Proficient understanding of ISO50001
  • Basic understanding of ISO45001, ISO9001, ISO14001, and/or ISO55001
