Job summary

Veolia Australia and New Zealand is seeking a Reliability Engineer to improve asset performance across wastewater infrastructure in the Wellington Region. You will apply RCM, FMEA, RCA and lifecycle asset management to reduce downtime and maintenance costs.

You will work with operations, maintenance and asset teams to deliver reliability improvements, data-driven reports and proactive maintenance strategies in a complex contract environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Asset Management or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Develop reliability improvement plans for critical assets.
• Identify reliability risks, recurring failures and opportunities to reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.
• Develop and maintain asset criticality assessments.
• Review and optimise preventive and predictive maintenance programmes.
• Facilitate RCM, FMEA, maintenance strategy and maintenance optimisation reviews.
• Lead or support investigations into significant, recurring or high-consequence equipment failures.
• Conduct Root Cause Analysis using methods like 5 Whys, fishbone, fault tree and causal factor analysis.
• Develop, monitor and close out corrective and preventive actions.
• Analyse data from CMMS, SCADA, historians and condition monitoring systems.
• Develop reliability reports, dashboards and practical recommendations.
• Monitor asset availability, reliability, maintainability, MTBF, MTTR, maintenance compliance, backlog and unplanned downtime.
• Support asset replacement, renewal, upgrade, capital works, commissioning and handover.
• Assist with critical spares strategies and shutdown planning.
• Provide technical support during equipment failures and abnormal operating conditions.
• Support continual improvement of Asset Management System aligned with ISO 55001.
• Promote proactive maintenance and continuous improvement culture in Wellington Region.

The Opportunity

Veolia is seeking a motivated Reliability Engineer to improve the reliability, availability, maintainability and whole-of-life performance of wastewater treatment assets across the Wellington Region.

This is an opportunity to make a practical contribution to essential infrastructure while working alongside operations, maintenance, asset management and project teams. You will provide engineering and reliability expertise across wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, a thermal dryer facility, sludge minimisation facility and associated infrastructure.

The role will focus on identifying and eliminating the causes of equipment failure, optimising maintenance strategies, improving asset performance and supporting safe, compliant and cost-effective operations.

What you'll be responsible for

As Reliability Engineer, you will develop and deliver reliability improvement initiatives using recognised methodologies, including:

• Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM)
• Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
• Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
• Asset criticality and risk assessment
• Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance
• Preventive maintenance optimisation
• Lifecycle asset management

You will work across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control systems, civil and process assets, using data and engineering judgement to support informed asset management decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Promote a proactive maintenance and continuous improvement culture across the Wellington Region.

What you'll need to be successful

You will be a practical and analytical engineering professional who enjoys working closely with operational and maintenance teams. You will be comfortable working in the field, investigating complex equipment issues and translating technical information into clear, achievable actions.

You will ideally have:

• A bachelor’s degree in Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Asset Management or a related discipline.
• At least three years’ experience in reliability, maintenance, asset management or engineering.
• Experience in water, wastewater, utilities, manufacturing, process industries or other critical infrastructure environments.
• Knowledge of reliability engineering and maintenance management principles.
• Experience with RCM, FMEA, RCA, criticality analysis and lifecycle asset management.
• The ability to read and interpret P&IDs and understand process flows, equipment interactions and failure pathways.
• Experience analysing maintenance records, failure data, condition monitoring results and asset performance trends.
• Strong problem-solving, reporting and stakeholder communication skills.
• A sound understanding of risk assessment and criticality analysis.
• A strong commitment to safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

Experience with wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations or similar process environments would be advantageous.

The following qualifications or certifications are desirable:

• Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) or equivalent.
• Training or certification in RCA, RCM, FMEA or condition monitoring.
• Qualifications in vibration analysis, thermography, motor current analysis, non-destructive testing or other condition monitoring disciplines.
