Job summary

Nelson City Council is seeking experienced Principal and Senior Planners to guide sustainable growth in the Nelson region. Based in Nelson, New Zealand, you will lead the Resource Consents team, provide expert planning advice, mentor staff, and contribute to cross-Council projects.

You will process complex applications, influence decision-making, and represent evidence at hearings, with a focus on continuous improvement and delivery of high-quality outcomes for our customers and community.

Qualifications

• Experience processing resource consent applications.
• Strong knowledge of the Resource Management Act and related legislation.
• Experience with consent hearings and the Making Good Decisions framework.
• Ability to prepare and present expert witness evidence.

Responsibilities

• Process a wide range of resource consent applications with varying complexity.
• Provide technical leadership and act as a subject matter expert on resource consents.
• Mentor and develop junior planners within the team and build stakeholder relationships.
• Lead continuous improvement of processes, procedures, and templates.
