Job summary

Stats NZ is seeking an experienced and influential data science leader to shape the future of integrated data research and statistical production in New Zealand. As Principal Data Scientist, you will design, develop, and steward code modules, applying advanced technical judgement to complex data challenges, ensuring modules remain trusted, reusable and fit for purpose.

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related field. Postgraduate qualifications are highly regarded.
• Extensive senior experience in data science, statistical analysis, advanced analytics, machine learning, or research leadership within complex environments.
• Knowledge of Databricks or experience working in modern cloud-based analytics environments would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of new and upgraded code modules and ensure they are reusable and well-documented.
• Improve automation and quality assurance practices across code modules.
• Help establish sustainable stewardship arrangements across the module library.
• Contribute to the future direction of tooling, standards, and technical approaches as capabilities evolve.
• Coach, mentor and develop capability of others and promote best-practice data product development.
