Job summary

Otago Polytechnic is seeking a Plumber / Campus Services Technician to maintain and improve plumbing systems across our campus environment. This hands-on role offers variety and the chance to develop skills in building technology and automation within a supportive facilities team.

You will lead plumbing services, coordinate contractors when needed, and contribute to both corrective and preventive maintenance while ensuring a safe, reliable campus experience for staff, learners and visitors.

Qualifications

• A recognised plumbing qualification.
• A current New Zealand plumbing registration (or ability to obtain).
• Practical maintenance and fault-finding experience.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Proactive and solutions-focused attitude.

Responsibilities

• Lead plumbing services across the campus as the primary technical resource.
• Perform plumbing maintenance and repairs (preventative and reactive).
• Troubleshoot faults and defects to restore systems.
• Contribute to minor capital works and building improvements.
• Coordinate and supervise external contractors when required.
• Support campus-wide infrastructure systems and on-call roster duties.

This is a unique position offering far more variety than a traditional plumbing role. You'll be responsible for maintaining and improving plumbing systems across a diverse campus environment while also developing new skills in building technology, automated building systems, and campus infrastructure.

As our Plumber / Campus Services Technician, you'll be the lead technical resource for plumbing services across the Campus. You'll work alongside a skilled facilities team and coordinate specialist contractors when required.

The role offers a mix of:

• Plumbing maintenance and repairs
• Fault finding and troubleshooting
• Preventative and reactive maintenance
• Minor capital works and improvement projects
• Contractor coordination and supervision
• Support for campus-wide infrastructure systems

This is a hands-on, varied role where your technical expertise directly supports the day-to-day experience of our campus community. You will be required to be on-call as part of a rostered system.

You will ideally have:

• A recognised plumbing qualification
• Current New Zealand plumbing registration (or ability to obtain)
• Practical maintenance and fault-finding experience
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
• A proactive and solutions-focused attitude

It would be an advantage if you had the following but if you don't - still apply:

• Boiler operator experience
• Experience working with commercial or institutional buildings
• Exposure to heating systems, pumps, controls, or Building Management Systems
• Experience managing contractors and service providers
