Physics Specialist & Junior Science Teacher – Secondary School

Working In NZ is seeking a skilled and motivated Physics specialist to teach senior Physics and junior Science (Years 9–10) for a permanent position at a well-established secondary school in South Auckland.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a diverse, community-focused school with a strong emphasis on high expectations, student achievement, and meaningful pathways through NCEA and further study.

We are looking for a teacher with strengths in areas such as:

  • Senior Physics, including NCEA assessment (internal and external)
  • Key Physics concepts including mechanics, electricity and electromagnetism, waves, and modern physics
  • Junior Science (Years 9–10) across biology, chemistry, physics, and Planet Earth and Beyond contexts
  • Developing students’ scientific knowledge, skills, and capabilities through investigation and evidence-based reasoning
  • Practical, laboratory-based teaching and safe laboratory management
  • Supporting students across a range of abilities and pathways
About the role

The successful candidate will deliver engaging programmes aligned with the Science learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum, supporting students to:

  • Develop understanding of the Nature of Science
  • Build scientific literacy through investigation, interpretation of evidence, and communication of findings
  • Apply scientific knowledge to real-world, local, and global contexts
  • Develop practical investigation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

At senior level, the role includes supporting students to achieve success in NCEA Physics and preparing them for further study and careers in science, engineering, health, and related fields.

What you will bring
  • A Physics specialism, with the ability to teach senior Physics through to NCEA level
  • Capability to teach junior Science across Years 9–10
  • Strong practical teaching skills and confidence in laboratory environments
  • Experience with or understanding of NCEA assessment practices
  • Ability to deliver differentiated, inclusive, and engaging programmes
  • Commitment to student wellbeing, engagement, and culturally responsive practice
  • Strong relationship-building skills with students, whānau, and colleagues

We are particularly interested in candidates who have completed initial teacher training and gained classroom experience within curriculum-based education systems broadly aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, such as those in the UK, Ireland, the USA, and Canada.

To teach in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Teaching Council of New Zealand.
