Job summary

LIC's Research and Development group in New Zealand is offering a paid summer internship focused on the molecular architecture of inbreeding depression in dairy cattle. You will work on quantitative and molecular genetics, benchmarking software, compiling recessive variant lists, and exploring annotations, with on-site work at LIC Newstead Hamilton.

Compensation is $29.90 per hour for 10 weeks, minimum 30 hours per week, up to 400 hours, and a final presentation/report.

Qualifications

• Legally permitted to work in New Zealand.
• Undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at NZQA level 6–10; final semester ended within the last 12 months.
• Studying science, technology, engineering, design or business at a New Zealand tertiary education institute.
• Be able to work on-site at LIC Newstead Hamilton for a substantial portion of the internship.

Responsibilities

• Benchmark software packages for quantifying inbreeding in genotyped dairy cattle.
• Compile lists of recessive variants discovered from previous genetic mapping studies to assess their influence on inbreeding depression metrics.
• Extend the above to evaluate how other types of functional variant annotations may influence inbreeding depression.
• Assess how new inbreeding knowledge could influence the LIC breeding scheme, and how new frameworks could influence sire selection and animal health and performance.
• Deliver a presentation and submit a report at the conclusion of the internship.
