Job summary

Red Badge Group is seeking an Overnight Security Guard & Night Porter for a Wānaka retirement village. You’ll provide a visible overnight security presence, conduct patrols, manage access and reception, respond to incidents, and be on-call for residents during night hours.

The role operates on a permanent 30-hour week with set overnight shifts, Thursday to Saturday 20:00–06:00, in Wanaka. You’ll work independently while coordinating with day shift teams and management.

Qualifications

• Current and valid NZ COA security licence or eligible to obtain one.
• Clean criminal record and ability to pass pre-employment screening checks.
• Experience in night security, portering or similar customer-facing security roles is advantageous but not essential.
• Strong observation, communication and incident reporting skills with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
• Comfortable working independently overnight with good time management and initiative.
• Professional presentation and discretion handling sensitive information and CCTV footage.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols of buildings, grounds and carparks to deter unauthorised activity and identify hazards.
• Provide night porter duties including access control, reception for late arrivals, key management and assisting residents or guests as required.
• Respond promptly to alarms, incidents and welfare checks, escalating to emergency services or site management when necessary.
• Monitor CCTV and alarms and ensure incidents are recorded and reported.
• Complete incident reports, nightly handovers and logs to ensure shift continuity.
• Maintain site safety by reporting hazards and supporting fire/evacuation procedures; ensure doors and access points are secure.
• Provide on-call courteous, customer-focused assistance to residents, guests and staff while upholding security standards.
• Carry out general site duties such as de-icing roads for residents.
• Comply with policies, privacy requirements and health and safety procedures.

Provide a secure, welcoming overnight presence at a Wānaka retirement village, carrying out patrols, access control, incident response and liaison with tenants, visitors and emergency services. This permanent role helps keep property, residents and guests safe while ensuring a calm and professional environment through the night.

This is a permanent 30 hour per week night shift role working a set roster of overnight shifts. Successful applicants must be available to work overnight shifts on Thursday - Saturday | 2000-0600.

The role

You will conduct patrols, manage access and reception duties during night hours, respond to incidents and alarms, and being on call for residents in case of support required and also includes general site duties such as De-icing the roads for the residents. The role requires strong observation, clear reporting and the ability to work independently overnight while maintaining close communication with the daytime team and management.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols of buildings, grounds and carparks to deter unauthorised activity and identify hazards.
• Provide night porter duties including access control, reception for late arrivals, key management and assisting residents or guests as required.
• Respond promptly and professionally to alarms, incidents and welfare checks, escalating to emergency services or site management when necessary.
• Monitor CCTV and alarms as directed, ensuring any incidents are accurately recorded and reported.
• Complete clear incident reports, nightly handovers and operational logs to ensure continuity between shifts.
• Maintain site safety by identifying and reporting hazards, supporting fire and evacuation procedures, and ensuring doors and access points are secure.
• Provide on-call courteous, customer-focused assistance to residents, guests, contractors and night staff while maintaining professional security standards.
• Carry out general site duties as required e.g. De-Icing the roads for residents.
• Comply with company policies, privacy requirements and health and safety procedures at all times.

What You’ll Bring

• A current and valid New Zealand Certificate of Approval (COA) security licence, or eligibility to obtain one.
• A clean criminal record and the ability to pass pre-employment screening checks.
• Previous experience in night security, portering, concierge or similar customer-facing security roles is advantageous but not essential.
• Strong observation, communication and incident reporting skills with the ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
• Comfortable working independently overnight with good time management and initiative.
• Professional presentation, high integrity and respect for confidentiality when handling sensitive information and CCTV footage.
• Basic IT skills and confidence using reporting systems and radios.
• Reliable, punctual and safety-focused with a customer-first approach.
• Eligible to work in New Zealand and 18 years or older.
