Job summary

The Isaac Construction Co Limited in Timaru, Canterbury seeks a reliable road maintenance operator to join our IDC program. You will operate and maintain our fleet, support pothole repairs, drainage work and vegetation control on highways.

Qualifications

• Current and valid New Zealand driver licence (Class 4 minimum).
• WTR endorsement (Class 5) desirable.
• Experience operating plant and driving in a road maintenance or civil construction environment.
• Be available for rostered on-call duties for network incidents or emergency events.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain company trucks, vehicles and road maintenance plant safely and efficiently.
• Carry out maintenance tasks such as pothole repairs, shoulder reinstatement, signage installation, drainage clearing and vegetation control.
• Load, transport and unload materials, aggregate and equipment between depots and worksites; ensure loads are secured and vehicle checks are completed prior to departure.
• Work collaboratively with crew members, contractors and stakeholders to deliver projects to agreed standards, timeframes and contractual requirements.
• Adhere to all health, safety and environmental policies; participate in toolbox talks, site inductions and training activities.

About the Contract - South Canterbury Integrated Delivery Contracts (IDC)

New Zealand’s state highways are more than roads. They are the lifelines that connect our communities, fuel our economy, and keep people moving safely every day. NZTA/Waka Kotahi manage these highways through a series of Integrated Delivery Contracts (IDC). Isaac holds the South Canterbury IDC, encompassing SH1, SH8, SH77, SH78 (shortest State Highway in New Zealand at 938m long), SH79, SH80 and SH82.

The IDC focuses on maintaining, upgrading and preserving essential public infrastructure across these highways, including roads, bridges and drainage systems, alongside incident response. With such a large network to maintain, no two days are the same, providing a diverse and rewarding work environment with strong career progression opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain company trucks, vehicles and road maintenance plant (e.g. chip spreaders, pothole patching units, rollers, tip trucks and other vehicles) safely and efficiently in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and company procedures.

• Carry out maintenance tasks such as pothole repairs, shoulder reinstatement, signage installation, drainage clearing and vegetation control to maintain safe road corridors.

• Load, transport and unload materials, aggregate and equipment between depots and worksites; ensure loads are secured and vehicle checks are completed prior to departure.

• Work collaboratively with crew members, contractors and stakeholders to deliver projects to agreed standards, timeframes and contractual requirements.

• Adhere to all health, safety and environmental policies; participate in toolbox talks, site inductions and training activities to promote a positive safety culture.

Skills & Experience – What You’ll Bring

• Current and valid New Zealand driver licence (Class 4 minimum); WTR endorsement or higher class (Class 5) desirable.

• Proven experience operating plant and driving in a road maintenance or civil construction environment is preferred.

• Be available for rostered on-call duties for network incidents or emergency events – including early starts, late finishes, weekend and nights.

• Ability to follow traffic management plans and work safely within live traffic environments.

• Strong practical skills, reliability, and a solution-focused attitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Good communication skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality, customer-focused outcomes for local communities.
