Job summary

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora in Auckland invites applications for a specialist obstetric medicine position. This role integrates internal medicine with obstetric care for women with medical problems during pregnancy, building on a formal, accredited training pathway.

The position is the only full-time, accredited Obstetric Medicine training post in New Zealand, offering 2x6 month or 1x12 month blocks from Feb 2027 to Jan 2028. It requires NZ registration and RACP eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Experience in obstetric medicine and pregnancy-related medical care.
  • Advanced Trainee or Fellow of the RACP (or equivalent).
  • NZ Medical Council General Registration is required.
  • Approval from RACP (or equivalent) to pursue Advanced Training or post-FRACP training.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist-level obstetric medicine evaluation and management for pregnant patients.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to a busy unit and participate in academic and training activities.

The opportunity

Obstetric Medicine (Maternal Medicine) is an exciting and challenging subspecialty of internal medicine which integrates care by obstetric physicians (specialists in internal medicine) with that of the multidisciplinary team consisting obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, midwives and allied health workers, to provide care for women with medical problems in pregnancy or women who develop medical complications during pregnancy.

Obstetric Medicine is well-established at NWH and provides the following:
  • Specialist evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for women with a wide range of medical disorders including diabetes, congenital and acquired cardiac, haematological, respiratory, renal, hepatobiliary, oncological and neurological conditions as well as obstetric-related conditions such as preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and cholestasis of pregnancy
  • The only formal full time, accredited training position for Obstetric Medicine in New Zealand (with certification issued by the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand, SOMANZ)

You will need to have:
  • previous Obstetric Medicine experience
  • Advanced Trainee or Fellow of RACP (or equivalent college or international trainee)
  • NZMC General Registration
  • approval from RACP (or equivalent college) as eligible for Advanced Training or post FRACP training
  • motivation and willingness to contribute to a busy unit
  • intention to pursue a career in reproductive medicine.
