Job description

Build and strengthen the networks that keep one of New Zealand's largest technology environments running

Modern banking depends on resilient, secure and highly available infrastructure. Behind every digital interaction sits a complex network and compute environment that needs to perform at scale, recover quickly and continuously evolve.

We're looking for a Network Systems Engineer to join a team focused on strengthening and modernising critical infrastructure across ASB. This is a hands‑on role where you'll help improve the health, resilience and lifecycle management of core network platforms, contributing to large-scale upgrade programmes, vulnerability remediation, operational improvements and automation initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving real infrastructure challenges, wants to work alongside experienced specialists, and is motivated by seeing the direct impact of their work. You'll be supported by a highly capable team while building deeper expertise across networking, infrastructure operations and automation.

About the Team

You will join a specialist infrastructure engineering team within ASB's technology function, responsible for supporting and evolving critical network and compute platforms that underpin essential banking services.

The team works across a broad technology landscape spanning networking, compute infrastructure, operational management and automation. With a strong focus on improving resilience, security and operational excellence, the team is driving significant infrastructure uplift work while continuing to support a large and complex environment.

About the Role

As a Network Systems Engineer, you’ll help maintain, improve and modernise ASB's network infrastructure. You’ll be involved in everything from patching, upgrades and operational support through to identifying opportunities for automation and continuous improvement.

This role combines day‑to‑day engineering with longer‑term uplift initiatives. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers to improve platform stability, reduce risk, increase operational efficiency and help ensure critical infrastructure remains secure, reliable and fit for the future.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support and maintain enterprise network and infrastructure platforms
  • Deliver software, firmware and platform upgrades across critical environments
  • Contribute to vulnerability remediation and infrastructure lifecycle management activities
  • Monitor system health, performance and operational metrics
  • Investigate, troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues
  • Support operational processes including incident, problem and change management
  • Assist with capacity planning and platform optimisation activities
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and engineering best practices
  • Partner with engineers and stakeholders to deliver infrastructure improvements and resilience outcomes
  • Participate in after-hours maintenance activities and on‑call support as required
About You

You're a practical engineer who enjoys working close to the technology. You combine strong operational discipline with a continuous improvement mindset and take pride in delivering reliable outcomes.

You may already be working as a Network Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, Systems Engineer or in a network operations environment and be looking for an opportunity to broaden your technical capability. You're comfortable working in operational environments, enjoy solving problems, and are motivated by learning from experienced engineers while contributing meaningful improvements of your own.

Most importantly, you're curious, proactive and willing to roll your sleeves up to help improve how things are done.

Key Skills & Experience
  • Experience supporting enterprise network infrastructure environments
  • Strong knowledge of Cisco networking technologies
  • Experience with Cisco UCS or similar compute platforms
  • Experience supporting F5 environments or comparable network services technologies
  • Understanding of infrastructure operations, monitoring and support practices
  • Experience with incident, problem and change management processes
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to work effectively across operational support and project-based engineering activities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience with Infoblox
  • Exposure to infrastructure automation and configuration management tooling
  • Experience with Ansible, Terraform or similar automation technologies
