Qualifications

  • Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Medical Oncology) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
  • FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ.
  • Sub-specialty expertise in melanoma, lung cancer and head and neck cancer advantageous.
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care.
  • Relevant experience and training in oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment for cancer patients.
  • Manage systemic anticancer therapies and contribute to tumour stream meetings.
  • Support equitable access to evidence-based oncology services across the district.
  • Contribute to service development, teaching and supervision of junior medical staff.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement activities aligned with cancer priorities.

Service: Medical Oncology Service

Contract: Part time (up to 0.845 FTE), 12 months fixed term (starting April 2026)

About The Role

We are currently seeking a part-time, fixed-term Medical Oncologist to cover paternity leave.

The Medical Oncologist is responsible for providing specialist assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with cancer, working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. The role includes managing systemic anticancer therapies, contributing to tumour stream multidisciplinary meetings, and supporting equitable access to evidence based oncology services across the district. The Medical Oncologist will also contribute to service development, teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, and participate in research and quality improvement activities aligned with national and regional cancer priorities.

A range of cancer services are provided by Capital, Coast and Hutt District including Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Haematology services. We are looking for a Medical Oncologist to join this dynamic and innovative team.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals - Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua - as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About You
  • Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Medical Oncology) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
