Job summary

Clutha Health First in Balclutha is seeking a Rural Health Medicine Specialist, Senior Medical Officer or Medical Officer to join the Inpatient Unit. You will provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management, with collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

The role offers Monday to Friday with alternating early and late shifts, limited on-call for Urgent Afterhours, and opportunities for teaching, leadership, governance, and professional development.

Qualifications

• Broad clinical expertise to manage a wide range of medical presentations in a rural hospital setting.
• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and patient management skills.
• Excellent communication and patient-centred approach.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience or interest in teaching and mentoring others.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients in the Inpatient Unit and related services.
• Conduct clinical consultations and coordinate care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Interpret diagnostic investigations and perform appropriate clinical procedures.
• Collaborate with nurses, allied health, and regional partners for patient care.
• Leadership, teaching, and supervision of students in Rural Medicine Immersion Program.

Ideally, You'll Bring:

• A recognised medical qualification and current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• Broad clinical expertise with the ability to manage a wide range of medical presentations in a rural hospital setting.
• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and patient management skills.
• Excellent communication skills and a compassionate, patient-centred approach.
• The ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and develop strong clinical partnerships.
• Experience or interest in teaching, coaching, and supporting the professional development of others.
• Rural hospital or community-based healthcare experience would be advantageous.
• A commitment to continuous professional development, clinical excellence, and quality improvement.
