Job summary

Tip Top Bakeries, part of George Weston Foods, is seeking a Mechanical/Maintenance Engineer Apprentice to join our Wiri site. This fixed-term role offers hands-on training while you complete your trade qualification in a fast-paced, 24/7 food manufacturing environment.

You’ll learn mechanical maintenance, reliability and site projects with mentoring from qualified tradespeople, handling daily maintenance, breakdown responses and planned works as you progress.

Qualifications

• Interest in mechanical/maintenance engineering and how things work.
• Willingness to learn, ask questions and take direction.
• Strong safety mindset and reliable work ethic.
• Reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a team.
• NCEA Level 2 or equivalent (Maths and/or Workshop Technology an advantage).

Responsibilities

• Assisting with maintenance, repair and installation of production equipment.
• Learning to diagnose and fix mechanical faults under supervision.
• Supporting planned maintenance activities and shutdown work.
• Working safely and to food safety standards in a manufacturing environment.
• Attending block courses and completing apprenticeship study requirements.
• Documenting work completed in maintenance system (MEX).

Tip Top is looking for a Mechanical/Maintenance Engineer Apprentice to join our Engineering team at our Wiri site. This is a hands-on opportunity to build a trade qualification while working on real production equipment in a fast-paced, 24/7 food manufacturing environment.

You’ll work alongside our experienced engineering team, gaining practical skills in mechanical maintenance and reliability while completing your trade qualification. You’ll be involved in day-to-day maintenance, breakdown response, planned works and capital projects across the site, with support and mentoring from qualified tradespeople throughout.

• Assisting with the maintenance, repair and installation of production equipment
• Learning to diagnose and fix mechanical faults under supervision

• Willingness to learn, ask questions and take direction
• A strong safety mindset
• Reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a team
• NCEA Level 2 or equivalent (Maths and/or Workshop Technology an advantage)
• Full driver’s licence preferred
