Job summary

Rio Tinto operates in New Zealand at the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) site. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Tradesperson to join the Reduction Maintenance team to keep critical production equipment safe, reliable and available through planned and unplanned maintenance, diagnosing faults and contributing to continuous improvement.

This is a hands-on, shift-based role (roster 2) based at Tiwai Point near Invercargill, with relocation assistance and access to Southland’s outdoor

Qualifications

• Mechanical trade qualifications or transferable trade qualifications.
• Experience doing planned and unplanned mechanical repair and diagnostics.

Responsibilities

• Complete planned and unplanned mechanical maintenance within production time constraints.
• Diagnose equipment faults and carry out repairs across production equipment.
• Identify health, safety and environment opportunities to improve equipment, processes and behaviours.
• Implement improvement initiatives and robust defect elimination practices.
• Manage workload and act as a point of contact for assigned jobs.
• Contribute to continuous improvement in safety, cost, reliability and productivity.

You will have excellent communication skills and experience working both independently and as part of a team. You will be self‑motivated, willing to learn and committed to the safety of yourself and those around you.

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

A Mechanical trade qualification or another transferable trade qualification

Experience completing planned and unplanned mechanical repair and diagnostic work

Strong problem‑solving skills and the flexibility to respond to changing maintenance requirements

The ability to communicate clearly and work effectively both independently and as part of a team

A demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
