Job summary

New Zealand Steel – Glenbrook, North Island, invites motivated individuals to join as Mechanical Apprentices. You’ll learn from experienced tradespeople, gaining hands‑on experience across maintenance activities while pursuing a recognised mechanical trade qualification.

The program runs on site for four years, combining practical on‑the‑job learning with trade requirements. We value attitude, reliability and a proactive, safety‑mocused approach.

Qualifications

• The candidate must have a hands-on approach and willingness to learn.
• Strong commitment to health and safety and ability to work in a team.
• Genuine interest in mechanical engineering and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Assist with mechanical maintenance, repairs and fault finding.
• Use hand and power tools and mechanical equipment.
• Read and interpret technical drawings.
• Maintain and repair industrial machinery and equipment.
• Work safely as part of a maintenance team.
• Progress toward a qualified mechanical tradesperson through on-site learning.

Education

NCEA Level 2 or equivalent

We are looking for a motivated Mechanical Apprentice to join our team; this is a fantastic opportunity to gain a recognised mechanical trade qualification while developing practical skills and experience in a large industrial environment.

What you’ll be doing

As a Mechanical Apprentice with SteelServ, you’ll learn from experienced tradespeople while gaining hands-on experience across a range of mechanical maintenance activities. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills in areas such as:

• Mechanical maintenance, repairs and fault finding
• Using hand and power tools and mechanical equipment
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings
• Maintaining and repairing industrial machinery and equipment
• Working safely as part of a skilled maintenance team
• Developing the knowledge and practical skills required to become a qualified mechanical tradesperson

Your apprenticeship will be completed on site at New Zealand Steel over four years, combining practical, on-the-job learning with the requirements of your trade qualification.

What we’re looking for

To be successful, you will have:

• NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
• A genuine interest in mechanical engineering and maintenance
• Proven mechanical aptitude or a strong interest in how things work

• Reliability and a positive attitude
• The ability to work well as part of a team

Previous hands‑on experience, hobbies or interests involving mechanical work, tools, vehicles, machinery or equipment would be an advantage.
