NZ Transport Agency | Waka Kotahi seeks three Principal Engineers, Detection and Response to strengthen its cyber defence through advanced threat detection, threat hunting and incident response. The role covers SIEM, XDR and EDR platforms, improving detection coverage and reducing time to detect threats across critical services.

This senior technical position combines hands-on detection engineering, leadership and tactical response, including on-call duties to maintain NZTA’s cyber resilience

Competenze

• Strong detection engineering experience across SIEM/XDR/EDR platforms.
• Experience investigating suspicious activity and threat hunting using telemetry and threat intelligence.
• Evidence-based approach to identifying detection gaps and turning threat insights into practical improvements, with familiarity with MITRE ATT&CK beneficial.
• Experience using automation or scripting to improve security workflows; SOAR experience advantageous.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and review detection content for improvements.

• Design, tune and maintain detection rules, correlations and analytics.
• Lead threat hunting activities and translate threat intel into detection content.
• Identify coverage gaps and drive continuous improvement of detection capability.
• Develop automation, SOAR playbooks and response workflows.
• Set quality standards and validate content before deployment.
• Provide specialist expertise for security tool and platform evaluations.
• Act as tactical responder for significant cyber incidents; support containment and recovery.
