ABB Napier, New Zealand, seeks an experienced Power Electronics Engineer to lead the hardware design of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and UPSs over 200 kW. You will develop energy management, perform testing, and support commissioning across customer sites, collaborating with global teams.

The role requires a strong background in power electronics, three-phase systems, and grid compliance, with 5+ years of experience and a degree in Electrical Engineering. On-site work in Napier, NZ.

Qualifications

• Experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and power converters >200 kW.
• Minimum 5 years designing/maintaining power electronic systems in engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of three-phase systems and inverter/converter operation.
• Knowledge of grid codes, power quality, disturbance ride-through and anti-islanding is desirable.
• Foundational EMC concepts and thermal management in electrical cabinets.

Responsabilités

• Lead hardware design and development of BESS and UPS systems.
• Analyze and validate LV/MV energy management, protection, harmonic control, and storage integration.
• Perform electrical design: cable/harness sizing, routing, protection devices, sensors, power supplies.
• Conduct functional, performance, and safety testing per IEC/UL standards.
• Prepare technical documentation, test procedures, commissioning guides and interface specs.
• Plan and execute on-site commissioning, pre-commissioning, power-up sequences and optimization.
• Troubleshoot faults and provide technical guidance to customers.
