Modern banking depends on secure, resilient and highly automated technology platforms. Behind every payment, transfer or transaction is a complex ecosystem of infrastructure, cloud services, deployment pipelines and operational tooling that needs to work seamlessly.

We're looking for a Lead Platform Engineer to help define what's next. This is an opportunity to influence how platform engineering is done across one of ASB's most critical technology domains, leading the adoption of Infrastructure as Code, driving automation at scale, and establishing the engineering patterns that teams across Payments will build upon.

You'll join at a pivotal time. Significant platform modernisation is underway, with growing adoption of cloud technologies, infrastructure automation and modern engineering practices. About the Team

You'll join Shield Squad, a platform engineering team within ASB's Payments technology function. The team provides the foundational platforms, infrastructure services and operational capabilities that support payment systems across the bank.

From container platforms and CI/CD pipelines to observability, incident management and cloud infrastructure, the team plays a critical role in ensuring Payments technology remains secure, resilient and ready for the future. As the platform landscape evolves across Azure, AWS and modern automation tooling, Shield Squad is helping lead that transformation.

About the Role

This role exists to provide technical leadership across platform engineering initiatives within Payments. You'll work closely with engineering leaders, principal engineers and delivery teams to define architecture, establish standards and drive platform maturity.

Rather than maintaining existing platforms, you'll focus on building the future state. You'll help shape Infrastructure as Code capabilities, design automation frameworks, improve operational practices and create reusable engineering patterns that can be adopted across multiple teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the adoption and evolution of Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
• Define platform engineering standards, best practices and reusable patterns
• Design automation solutions that improve operational efficiency and reliability
• Create scalable approaches to infrastructure lifecycle management and platform operations
• Partner with engineering leaders and stakeholders to align technical direction
• Drive improvements across CI/CD, deployment automation and platform tooling
• Establish architectural guardrails that enable consistency across teams
• Identify opportunities to modernise legacy operational processes through automation
• Advocate for observability, monitoring, resilience and reliability best practices
• Mentor engineers and help uplift platform engineering capability across the wider Payments technology community

About You

You're a senior engineering leader who enjoys solving complex platform challenges and creating solutions that scale. You can operate strategically when defining a future-state vision, while still being technical enough to challenge ideas, guide implementation and support teams through delivery.

Key Skills & Experience

• Deep experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure or DevOps engineering environments
• Strong expertise with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices
• Experience designing and implementing automation solutions at enterprise scale
• Strong understanding of CI/CD platforms, deployment automation and modern engineering practices
• Experience working across Azure cloud environments
• Proven ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams or business units
• Experience defining engineering standards, frameworks and platform strategies
• Strong stakeholder engagement and technical leadership capability
• Knowledge of container platforms and cloud-native architectures
• Experience establishing operational excellence practices, including resilience and reliability engineering
• Exposure to AWS environments
• Experience with Ansible or infrastructure automation tooling
• Financial services or highly regulated industry experience beneficial
