Job summary

Auckland Council is hiring a Lead Lifeguard at Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre to ensure safe, high-quality aquatic experiences for customers. The role involves lifeguarding, helping run aquatics programmes, and supporting daily centre operations.

The position is permanent part-time (28 hours) with potential for up to 40 hours during school holidays and summer. Shifts include Tue–Fri afternoons and Sat day hours, with early/late shifts and weekend work required.

Qualifications

• Must hold a valid Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC).
• Ability to swim 50m and perform water rescue tasks as part of selection tests.
• Strong communication and customer service oriented approach.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance and support for aquatics-based programmes.
• Perform general lifeguarding duties to ensure safety of customers.

Our pool and leisure facilities are more popular than ever, and as Lead Lifeguard, for our Birkenhead Pool and Leisure Centre, you will play a key part in ensuring that all customers not only have a fantastic experience but a safe one. Your main responsibilities will include the following:

• Providing guidance on and supporting the delivery of aquatics-based programmes
• General lifeguarding duties to ensure customers are safe and looked after
• Supporting the Team Leader with day-to-day operations at the Centre.

This is a Permanent part-time, 28-hr position with the potential to work up to 40 hours per week during school holidays and the summer period. As our centre opens 7 days a week, the ability to work early and late shifts, as well as weekends, is crucial in this role. Shifts below:

• Tuesday to Friday: 3:00pm to 8:30pm (9:30pm finish on Thursdays during Terms 2 and 3)
• Saturday: 8:00am to 4:30pm (6:30am start during the winter months)

You’ll have a passion for aquatics and enjoy sharing your knowledge and experience with customers and colleagues to improve water safety. You will be an excellent communicator and committed to delivering exceptional aquatic programmes and providing a high level of customer satisfaction. Joining an energetic and passionate team, you’ll be a keen team player with a flexible approach and be able to take the initiative to help drive a positive safety culture.

We are looking for people who are strong swimmers, dedicated to helping others. To work as a pool, lead lifeguard in New Zealand, you will need to hold a Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC).

The first step in becoming a lifeguard for Auckland Council is to be able to pass this swim test. Please only apply for this position if you feel you can:

• Swim 50m breaststroke
• Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool
• Tread water for 5 minutes

Also, you must also be willing to complete First Aid training.

Salary rate: 30.92/hr. Please note, our employer KiwiSaver contribution is additional to the base salary offered.
