Job summary

H2R Consulting in New Zealand is seeking an accomplished Lead Business Intelligence Advisor to join a large public-sector organisation. You will operate at enterprise level, bridging strategy and technical delivery, across a portfolio of BI initiatives.

Based in Wellington or Auckland on an initial six-month contract, the role focuses on transitioning from Qlik to Power BI, guiding architecture, mentoring team members, and delivering credible guidance to stakeholders.

We are looking for an accomplished Lead Business Intelligence Advisor to join a large, nationally significant public-sector organisation.

This is a rare opportunity for someone who can operate strategically across an enterprise while remaining close enough to the technology to design solutions, diagnose complex issues and provide credible technical guidance.

You will work alongside experienced data and BI leaders within an established practice of approximately 20 people. The role will contribute across a portfolio of 10 to 15 projects, as well as supporting BAU delivery and the continued development of the organisation’s enterprise BI capability.

This is not a project management role, nor is it a purely hands-on development position. It requires someone who can move comfortably between strategic advisory conversations, stakeholder engagement, solution design, technical delivery and team mentoring.

What you will be doing

• Providing leadership, direction and trusted advice across the BI practice
• Supporting the organisation’s transition from Qlik to Power BI
• Creating, building and advising on enterprise BI solutions
• Contributing to project discovery, solution design and technical decision-making
• Diagnosing the root causes of complex data and reporting issues
• Advising on data warehousing, dimensional modelling and the broader enterprise architecture landscape
• Mentoring BI professionals and helping uplift capability across the practice
• Working with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all organisational levels
• Contributing to a varied portfolio that includes nationally significant safety, operational intelligence and enterprise reporting initiatives
• Helping develop standards, patterns and best practice within a Centre of Excellence environment

What we are looking for:

You will bring a strong combination of technical credibility, consulting capability and enterprise-level thinking.

Ideally, your background will include:

• Advanced experience with Power BI and enterprise BI solutions
• Strong data warehousing and dimensional modelling knowledge
• Experience designing or developing BI and analytics applications
• A sound understanding of enterprise data and solution architecture
• Consulting or advisory experience within complex organisations
• Experience working within, establishing or uplifting a BI Centre of Excellence
• The ability to influence senior stakeholders and communicate complex concepts clearly
• Experience mentoring technical professionals and guiding delivery teams
• A proactive, adaptable and delivery-focused working style
• The willingness to remain hands‑on when required
• Experience with Qlik, particularly within a Qlik-to-Power BI transition, would be highly advantageous.
