Job summary

Wintec is seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician (Chemistry) to join our Applied Science team at Hamilton city campus, with an immediate start available.

You will prepare laboratories, equipment, reagents and other materials for practical classes, support daily lab operations, maintain and calibrate equipment, manage stock and assist teaching staff in practical activities while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification in science or laboratory qualification.
• Experience in a chemistry laboratory.
• Hazardous Substances training and Certified Handler Certificate would be advantageous.
• Knowledge of laboratory health and safety requirements.
• Strong organisational and planning skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare laboratories, equipment, reagents and other materials for practical classes and teaching activities.
• Support the day-to-day operation of science laboratories, ensuring equipment and resources are available and functioning.
• Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, arranging repairs when necessary.
• Manage laboratory supplies, consumables and equipment inventories, including stocktaking and ordering.
• Support academic staff in the development and delivery of laboratory-based learning activities.
• Maintain a safe laboratory environment by identifying and managing hazards, following appropriate procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous substances, and supporting laboratory health and safety requirements.
• Work collaboratively with academic staff, laboratory technicians and other colleagues to ensure the smooth delivery of practical classes.

We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time, permanent Laboratory Technician (Chemistry) to join our Applied Science team at Wintec, with an immediate start available.

Based at our city campus in Hamilton, you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of our science programmes by ensuring that our laboratories, equipment and resources are well prepared for teaching and practical activities.

Working closely with academic staff and other laboratory technicians, you will help create a safe, well-organised and supportive laboratory environment where our ākonga can develop their scientific knowledge and practical skills.

In this role, you will:

• Prepare laboratories, equipment, reagents, specimens and other materials for practical classes and teaching activities.


• Support the day-to-day operation of science laboratories, ensuring that equipment and resources are available and functioning as required.


• Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, arranging repairs when necessary.


• Manage laboratory supplies, consumables and equipment inventories, including stocktaking and ordering.


• Support academic staff in the development and delivery of laboratory-based learning activities.


• Maintain a safe laboratory environment by identifying and managing hazards, following appropriate procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous substances, and supporting laboratory health and safety requirements.

You will bring relevant laboratory experience, strong organisational skills and a commitment to maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. You will enjoy working as part of a team and take pride in ensuring that laboratory facilities and resources are well prepared to support teaching and learning.

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Relevant tertiary qualification in science or laboratory qualification.


• Relevant experience working in a chemistry laboratory.


• Has completed Hazardous Substance training and holds a Certified Handler Certificate (and maintained by attending refresher training events) would be advantageous.


• Previous experience holding a Laboratory Manager designation as described in the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 would be advantageous.


• Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance and the safe handling and disposal of laboratory substances.


• An understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements, including hazardous substance management.


• Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.


• Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.


• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proactive and supportive approach to working with staff and students.


• Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident or hold a current NZ work permit
